Oct. 31st
- Go to a library (WMU, Kalamazoo Public Library, Portage Public Library, etc.) or go online (http://theredanimalproject.wordpress.com/2011/01/25/memoirs-by-veterans-of-iraq-and-afghanistan-part-one/) and read at least 100 pages of a memoir about a soldier that has been involved with the Iraq or Afghanistan wars. Recommended (but not required) memoirs: My War, House To House, The Unforgiving Minute, Faith Under Fire, One Bullet Away, The Blog Of War.
- Write at least a 2 page paper summarizing what the memoir was about and what you thought about it.
- Write up about 3-5 questions to ask the soldiers that will be visiting us on the Monday night's class.

Nov. 7th
- Before doing any of the culture readings, write down a list of the stereotypes of the Iraq and Afghan cultures. We will be discussing these in class on Nov. 7th.
- Read all of the reading that are available on the 'Readings' section under Group Led Units. These readings will be: scanned documents about Iraq and Afghan cultures, 2 online books about Iraq and Afghan cultures, and 1 scanned textbook about 9-11.
- Read 'Europe and America in the Middle East' by Allen Webb. This will be handed out in class on October 31st.
Nov. 14th
- For your final project, find a resource that you find that is valuable to teaching the Iraq and Afghan wars. Please email [email protected] your resource and an explanation of how you would use this resource in your own classroom. Your final project will be uploaded onto this website under the resource page.
